Monetizing Undervalued Hydrocarbons

The Zeus Technology Magazine, published monthly, reports on developing and existing technologies that monetize undervalued hydrocarbons, such as natural gas, coal, oilsands and biomass, into premium fuels and products. These hydrocarbons are all cheap when compared to crude oil and the petroleum fuels and products made with it.

Over the years, we have identified some 200 technical development areas for undervalued hydrocarbon conversion. The list spans from the latest advancements in mainstay technologies, such as gas liquefaction, to highly developmental technologies, such as ion-transport membranes, cellulosic biomass synthesis or underground coal gasification. The "CNG Ocean Transport 2004: A Progress Update of the Issues and Opportunities for Offshore CNG and Renewed and Expanded Economic Evaluation" report is now complete. This multi-client study builds off of the work performed in 2002 and 2003 to provide clients an objective, third-party assessment of the issues, economics and opportunities for CNG ocean transport.

At our December 2003 conference, it became clear participating clients had greater interest in a comparison of the five leading CNG technologies as they relate to prospective applications. Consequently, much of this work is focused on the unique characteristics of the designs and the economic implications of such to seven prospective applications. The report integrates much of the input from the JIP participants and discussions from the conference with our follow-on analysis.

The report also includes economic models in the format of four excel spread sheets which evaluate CNG ocean transport cases and economics.
