Gasification Outlook

Gasification is the key chemical process used in most energy-producing methods that originally began in the 1800s by converting coal into town gas for illumination and cooking.  The coal-derived fuel was soon replaced by cheap natural gas and electricity, but gasification continued to be used for synthetic chemicals and fuels production from the 1920s onwards.  Now the world is quickly returning to the gasification of coal as well as high-sulfur residual fuel oil, waste materials, petroleum coke, oilsands residues and biomass.

These abundant feedstocks are used  to create synthetic gas for power generation and for the productiion of transportation fuels, synthetic natural gas, hydrogen and chemicals.  Gasification is becoming increasingly more important with most of the world using coal-and-gas-based energy and with global energy demand soaring along with climate concerns.  Cleaner power generation, refining and chemical production methods are in very high demand and gasification is the best economical technology to produce products in an environmentally responsible way by creating syngas cleanly and efficiently.
